John M. Tidd

John M. Tidd, Psy.D. is an intimate relationship psychologist. He works with couples, individuals, and families who want more connected relationships within themselves and with the ones they love. Dr. Tidd specializes in marital/couples emotionally-focused psychotherapy.

Are you feeling lonely and misunderstood in your relationship? Disconnected? Unloved? Not valued? Have you lost your “spark”?

Do you want to feel loved, understood, and secure with your partner? Do you want to know that your partner is truly there for you, and you for them? That you are on the same team? Not enemies? Not just roommates?

Intimate relationships are among the most challenging experiences we face. They are also among the most fulfilling, joyful, and enriching processes we undertake.

Even amidst pain and disconnection, two committed partners can heal wounds, build trust, and develop a secure and emotionally deep connection. I work to set an open, safe, collaborative, compassionate, and understanding place for couples to repair wounds, regain trust, and create an emotionally experienced, securely bonded connection.

Within this atmosphere, we will work together to “slow down” and explore painful repetitive, mutually created cycles that seem out of control. These cycles are then understood as unwittingly developed obstacles to true intimacy that occur in all couples. The cycle, then, rather than the partner, is seen as to blame for the disconnection, and you can learn to stop blaming each other. You are now on the same team.

Together we will understand deeper emotions and interpretations of yourself and your partner that drive hurtful behaviors. Old dis-connective patterns can be changed. New intimate patterns of closeness can be developed. You may then then be able to convey yourselves in an authentic and transparent manner which can leave both of you feeling more securely loved and more deeply understood.

This transformation can be sustainable, as well as sustaining, for your connected intimate relationship which you may then trust to withstand the inevitable pains and ruptures that occur in any long term committed intimate relationship.

Intimate committed relationships truly have the power to heal wounds, to empower emotional growth, engender wisdom, and ultimately unfold a deep union with self, partner, and all of life itself.

Dr. Tidd received a B.A. in Psychology from The Ohio State University in 1984 and a Psy.D. from the Wright State University School of Professional Psychology in 1988. With over thirty one years of experience working with individuals, couples, families, and groups, Dr. Tidd is an experienced and accomplished relationship psychologist.

Dr. Tidd also receives ongoing clinical training in workshops and conferences with a focus on marital/couples psychotherapy, self relationship, and ethics. Training in emotionally focused therapy has become his clinical passion over the past ten years. He has attended an intensive conference with international leaders of the emotionally focused therapy model and his intention is to apply these skills with focus and awareness in my work with individuals and couples.

Outside the traditional therapeutic relationship, He has collaboratively developed and led retreats in California, Hawaii, Costa Rica, and locally at FSC’s Lunasol Retreat Center. In these workshops, individuals and couples explore both the natural world around them as well as their emotional connections with themselves and each other.

Early in his career, he received training in a variety of clinical settings: a runaway shelter for adolescents, a forensic center (minimum security prison), a university student psychological services center, an association for gifted children, community mental health centers, a children’s psychiatric hospital, and his current private practice for over the past 19 years. He has also been fortunate to have a number of spiritual teachers throughout his life’s journey.
