Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

A psychologist is a specialist in the study of the structure and function of the brain and related behaviors, emotions, and cognition. A psychologist may provide psychological evaluation, assessment, testing, diagnosis, and psychotherapy treatment, but may not prescribe medicine.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has been trained in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of mental disorders. They are able to prescribe medications as necessary and frequently work in conjunction with psychologists, in order to achieve the most effective patient treatment.

How long will therapy take? How often will I come to see my psychologist?

Therapy usually takes as long as it takes ! That being said, it depends entirely on the goals and needs of the person or persons who are seeking help. Every person is different, and therefore, their problems and concerns are different. Your psychologist will work out with you what goals and needs therapy can address and help you reach them in as reasonable a time frame as possible. Group therapy usually has a set number of weeks that it will run though, occasionally, a group might be designed to be ongoing. Certain testing procedures take more than one session, as do consultations for various learning and underachievement programs. Your psychologist will help you find the type of therapy which is best for you.

Does coming to a psychologist mean I am 'crazy'?

People come to therapy for a variety of reasons. While some are experiencing symptoms which make them question their ability to think clearly, many come for relationship enhancement, skill development (such as parenting) or to deal more maturely with stress from everyday living. There was a stigma attached to therapy in the 1950-60′s, but most people are now aware of how it can help the average person with problems in life.
